Online immigration system (eVISA) to replace physical documents with an online record of your immigration status -30 OCTOBER 2023

A digital immigration system is being created by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to replace the physical version of documents with an online version of your immigration status. This will show the conditions of your leave to enter or remain within the UK.

Documents that will be replaced include:

  • biometric residence permits (BRP)
  • biometric residence cards (BRC)
  • passport endorsements, such as indefinite leave to enter wet ink stamps
  • vignette stickers in passports, such as entry clearance or visa vignettes

What is the purpose of a UKVI account?

A UKVI account is required to view and prove your immigration status as well as share important information such as your right to rent and work in the UK. Registering a UKVI account is free of charge.

What can you do with a UKVI account?

With a UKVI account, information such as your immigration status can be shared with third parties, such as employers or landlords. You can generate a shared code that will grant them temporary access to your immigration status data.

Getting an eVisa and UKVI account

According to the government website, if ‘you currently have permission to stay in the UK and have either a BRP, a BRC or other physical documents to prove your immigration status, you do not have to take any action now.’

Through 2024, there will be updates on the government’s eVISA webpage providing support in regard to registering a UKVI account.
